What Your Executors and Trustees Need Before the New Year

A practical checklist for keeping your fiduciaries informed

As the year wraps up and people start tackling end-of-year tasks, it’s a good moment to check in on something often overlooked: whether your executor and trustee have what they need. A little clarity now can make their future responsibilities far easier.

1. Make Sure the Right People Are Still in Place

Review who you’ve named as executor, trustee, and backups. If someone has moved, had major life changes, or no longer feels like the best choice, it may be time to update your documents. Even if everything stays the same, a quick check-in with them can be helpful.

2. Let Them Know What Documents Exist

Your fiduciaries don’t need every detail, but they should know where to find your will, trust, powers of attorney, advance directives, and any memoranda. Some people share copies; others give clear instructions on where originals are stored. Either is fine—clarity is what matters.

3. Tell Them Where Key Items Are Kept

Make sure they know the location of your estate documents, safe deposit box, important financial records, titles, insurance policies, and—if relevant—how to access digital information. A short list goes a long way.

4. Flag Any Big Changes from the Past Year

If you added new accounts, bought property, updated beneficiaries, or made other major changes, let your fiduciaries know. They don’t need the full financial picture—just enough context to understand what they may be handling.

5. Share Who They Can Call for Guidance

Executors and trustees often rely on professionals to help them. Give them the names of your attorney, accountant, or financial advisor so they know exactly where to turn when the time comes.

A quick update now helps avoid confusion later.
