Review Your Beneficiaries Before the Year Speeds By

The last few months of the year tend to move quickly. Between fall activities, holidays, and year-end obligations, it’s easy to push personal planning tasks to the side. Taking time now to get organized can prevent stress later — and one of the simplest, most impactful steps you can take is reviewing your beneficiary designations.

It’s natural to focus on the big picture, like tax planning or setting new goals for the year ahead. But sometimes the smaller details make all the difference. Beneficiary forms determine who receives assets such as retirement accounts, life insurance proceeds, or payable-on-death accounts. If those forms don’t reflect your current wishes, your assets could end up in unintended hands — no matter what your will or trust says.

For example, if your life insurance policy still lists a sibling or former partner as your beneficiary, but you’ve since married, your current spouse may not receive those proceeds. That’s because beneficiary designations generally override the terms of your will. Reviewing and updating them now ensures your plan accurately reflects your life today, not the way it looked years ago.

It’s a good idea to check designations on:

  • Retirement accounts (401(k), IRA, pension plans)
  • Life insurance policies
  • Annuities or investment accounts
  • Payable-on-death (POD) and transfer-on-death (TOD) accounts

A quick review can prevent confusion or disputes later and provide peace of mind that everything aligns with your broader estate plan.
